Another whole year of Bush and Cheney isn't carved in stone
Editor, The Times:
Regarding "It'll take Superman to undo effects of Bush's Kryptonite" [Times, Lance Dickie editorial column, Dec. 28]: It is simply not true that it would take "a year to work up a credible impeachment panel." History shows that the entire process could be completed in four months — two in the House and two in the Senate. In fact, the Senate tried the Clinton impeachment in 21 days!
Articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney, HR 799, have been introduced in the House of Representatives, and await hearings. Twenty-five members of the House, including six on the House Judiciary Committee, support the bill to impeach. Three members of the House Judiciary Committee, including Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., are pushing hard for immediate hearings ["Web site targets Cheney's behavior," Nation Digest, Dec. 26].
Lance Dickie correctly observes Democrats are "consumed with the appearance of business as usual." Their inaction makes them complicit in lying, spying, torture and endless wars across the world. Their delay chokes the life out of democracy.
Only impeachment — not elections — can end executive lawbreaking and abuse of power. The time to impeach Cheney is now.
