Wallraff raises serious allegations against parcel service GLS

Low pay, high risk of accidents and exploitation system: Günter Wallraff was again working as an undercover investigative reporter and denounces the working conditions at the parcel carrier GLS. The company is pursuing "a form of modern slavery in the middle of Germany."

Günter Wallraff visited Borlänge and Falun on 13 May, 2011. He is a legendary journalist known throughout much of the world. His method of journalism has resulted in a verb, in Swedish "att wallraffa", in English "to wallraff"*. He wants to expose injustice, and much of his work has dealt with the situation of immigrants in society. The title of his latest - and most famous - film is Schwarz auf Weiß ("Black on White"). Using his undercover method, he tries to portray situations which Somalis and other blacks may experience in Germany.

The film is actually part of the book Aus der schönen neuen Welt ("Report from the Brave New World"). Günter Wallraff's seminars in Borlänge and Falun included interviews and discussions about his methods, work and, most of all, integration. Much of it based on his film Schwarz auf Weiß ("Black on White"), which was awarded the Gold World Medal at the New York Festival in 2011.

Spain: Miner protest intensifies


Spain: Miner protest intensifies via euronews-en

Miners in Asturias, north-west Spain, are continuing their protests against the withdrawal of government subsidies for mines, saying that without the funding the industry will collapse. In the ongoing unrest they have blocked railways and roads and clashed with police.

Via Business Insider: "As the war over income inequality wages on, super-rich Seattle entrepreneur Nick Hanauer has been raising the hackles of his fellow 1-percenters, espousing the contrarian argument that rich people don't actually create jobs. The position is controversial — so much so that TED is refusing to post a talk that Hanauer gave on the subject. National Journal reports today that TED officials decided not to put Hanauer's March 1 speech up online after deeming his remarks "too politically controversial" for the site...".

Google reports ‘alarming’ rise in censorship by governments

There has been an alarming rise in the number of times governments attempted to censor the internet in last six months, according to a report from Google.

Since the search engine last published its bi-annual transparency report, it said it had seen a troubling increase in requests to remove political content. Many of these requests came from western democracies not typically associated with censorship.

This video was created as an example of the importance of filming the police. Video provides transparency, accountability, and an accurate account of incidents that occur. It is no secret that the United States has a serious problem with police abuse, brutality, and corruption. It is essential for civilians to document their encounters with police officers to ensure transparency, accountability, and safety to all of those involved.

Police departments have, for too long, tried to bully, intimidate, threaten, arrest, or otherwise harass law abiding citizens from recording the activities of law enforcement in public. Enough is enough! It is time for all of us to take a stand and expose police brutality when we witness it. Even if the officers behavior is correct, and justifiable, we still encourage the recording of the police activities for the transparency and accountability that is desperately needed in many departments.
