Now i’m really getting pissed off

By David Michael Green, Information Clearing House

Hey did you hear about the iconic African-American guy who plays golf, and whose relationship with the public is in a free-fall lately?

No, as a matter of fact - I'm not talking about Tiger Woods.

You know, I've really been trying not to write an article every other week about all the things I don't like about Barack Obama.

But the little prick is making it very hard.

Like any good progressive, I've gone from admiration to hope to disappointment to anger when it comes to this president. Now I'm fast getting to rage.

How much rage? I find myself thinking that the thing I want most from the 2010 elections is for his party to get absolutely clobbered, even if that means a repeat of 1994. And that what I most want from 2012 is for him to be utterly humiliated, even if that means President Palin at the helm. That much rage.

Did this clown really say on national television that "I did not run for office to be helping out a bunch of you know, fat cat bankers on Wall Street"?!?!

Really, Barack? So, like, my question is: Then why the hell did you help out a bunch of fat cat bankers on Wall Street?!?! Why the hell did you surround yourself with nothing but Robert Rubin proteges in all the key economic positions in your government? Why did you allow them to open a Washington branch of Goldman Sachs in the West Wing? Why have your policies been tailored to helping Wall Street bankers, rather than the other 300 million of us, who just happen to be suffering badly right now?

Are you freakin' kidding me??? What's up with the passive president routine, anyhow, Fool? You hold the most powerful position in the world. Or maybe Rahm forgot to mention that to you. Or maybe the fat cat bankers don't actually let do that whole decision-making thing often enough that it would actually matter...

But, really, are you going to spend the next three interminable years perfecting your whiney victim persona? I don't really think I could bear that. Hearing you complain about how rough it all is, when you have vastly more power than any of us to fix it? Please. Not that.

Are you going to tell us that "I did not run for office to be shovel-feeding the military-industrial complex"? But what - they're just so darned pushy?

"...I did not run for office to continue George Bush's valiant effort at shredding the Bill of Rights. It's just that those government-limiting rules are so darned pesky."

"...I did not run for office to dump a ton of taxpayer money into the coffers of health insurance companies. It's just that they asked so nicely."

"...I did not run for office to block equality for gay Americans. I just never got around to doing anything about it."

"...I did not run for office to turn Afghanistan into Vietnam. I just didn't want to say no to all the nice generals asking for more troops."

Here's a guy who was supposed to actually do something with his presidency, and he's turned into the skinny little geek on Cell Block D who gets passed around like a rag doll for the pleasure of all the fellas with the tattoos there. He's being punked by John Boehner, for chrisakes. He's being rolled by the likes of Joe Lieberman. He calls a come-to-Jesus meeting with Wall Street bank CEOs, and half of them literally phone it in. Everyone from Bibi Netanyahu to the Japanese prime minister to sundry Iranian mullahs is stomping all over Mr. Happy.

He's acquitted but who's to blame?

by Yonatan Biomfeld, Breaking the Silence

How does a dead 13 year old girl fit with an acquitted Captain and a moral army? How does it happen that time and time again the IDF emerges out of the fogginess of its "military operations" and explains to us all what morality is?

It is unclear why "the acquittal of Captain R. indicates the morality of the IDF", as one Brigadier General was quoted claiming. We have here a curious reasoning, for how does a dead 13 year old girl fit with an acquitted Captain and a moral army? How does it happen that time and time again the IDF emerges out of the fogginess of its "military operations" and explains to us all what morality is?

Too little and too late we discover that the IDF operates in our name according to two moral codes – the first is fit for air-conditioned neon-lit rooms, and the other fits the reality of the operational world. Well, this is a problem. Moral codes cannot be tailored to fit reality. They are kept in test tubes. That is why they stay clean and pure, and that is why we get dirty trying to stay within the borders of sane red lines. The IDF failed at the moment it gave up its independent morality, and began bending and tailoring its moral codes to different areas, and to random open fire orders.

And 13 year old girl was killed, and the judges thought it appropriate to tell us that "the media should recognize its own limits, especially when it comes to military operations, which necessitates thorough understanding, and professional knowledge that journalists do not always possess." Honorable court – the media was not interested in operational questions, but in moral ones, and when it comes to morality the army does not have a monopoly; on the contrary.

The IDF whitewashes and bleaches terms like "kill verification", "neutralizing a threat", "extermination zone", and "unlawful use of weapon", while we, citizens, are expected to nod in approval and be proud. But proud in what exactly? Proud that our soldiers operated like robots? That they did not wait for certain identification to put bullet holes in a little girl? Or perhaps we are meant to be proud of the Captain who followed procedures?

Captain R. claimed in court, "I didn't think of anything except of my duty to push back the terrorists, push back the treat, and make sure that the contact line is not broken, as it had happened in Morag." Every word is carved in stone. Except there were no terrorists, no threat, and no contact line that was about to be broken. We are left with a dead 13 year old girl, and an acquitted Captain. What does that have to do with morality? Captain R. was acquitted. The IDF and Israeli society as a whole are guilty.

We are guilty of allowing every control and inspection system – military or civilian – to collapse in front of our very eyes. Once again we have judges that tell us that the military police investigations are unprofessional and that they have become a sad joke. But mostly and above all we are all guilty of sending generations of youngsters to a moral twilight zone, while not really feeling like knowing what that means. We have invented a sophisticated word-whitewasher to hide all that was uncomfortable for us to hear. Instead of talking about "extermination zones" and "a 13 year old girl that was killed in the name of the state of Israel" we talked about "exceptional cases" and unlawful use of weapon". The military judges today have acquitted the recent exceptional case, but we must not think that this exempts us from the need to make the real discussion.

Anti-Olympic movement faces repression in Canada

Info about the Anti-Olympic Convergence

In addition to building ongoing educational and resistance efforts, the Olympics Resistance Network is organizing towards an anti-2010 convergence, currently called for between Feb 10th-15th 2010. Building on the call by the Indigenous Peoples Gathering in Senora, Mexico in October 2007, we will be working to coordinate the logistics to host all rebels converging on Vancouver, Whistler, and surrounding unceded native land during 2010.

Over the year, there will be more information posted on this site regarding the convergence, however in the meantime we encourage as many communities to fundraise, raise awareness, and organize towards the anti-2010 Olympics convergence. We hope to see you all in 2010 to demonstrate our indignation and resistance!

Alissa Westergard-Thorpe of the Olympic Resistance Network speaks on the security apparatus during the games and how civil liberties will be affected. Created by Olympic Resistance Network Media. Filmed and Edited by Chris Bevacqua.

Olympic Resistance Network speaker prevented from speaking out in Portland

Marla Renn, a member of the Olympic Resistance Network (ORN), was travelling to Portland, Oregon to speak on the negative impacts of the 2010 Games. Renn was scheduled to speak at educational events at Mt. Hood Community College, Reed College, Portland State University, and the Red and Black Cafe. She was held for over six hours as both Canadian and US border guards interrogated her about the subject of her speech, her contacts in Portland, and her political activities. She was previously denied entry for a Seattle speaking event on the grounds that ten anti-Olympic shirts were unauthorised commercial merchandise, but the shirts were found after she had already been questioned on political issues. Likewise, the excuse for rejecting her this time (lack of employment since her graduation in August) was brought up after her planned speech and political activities were addressed by border guards.

Dwindling death penalty: Victim of the recession?

David Von Drehle writes for TIME

The death penalty used to be a big deal, important enough to figure prominently in the 1988 presidential debates. Four years later, in 1992, White House aspirant Bill Clinton, then governor of Arkansas, rushed home from the campaign trail to preside over an execution — because that's how politicians proved their mettle in those days.

This year's annual report of the Death Penalty Information Center (DPIC) shows how dramatically the issue has faded in recent years. Fewer death sentences were imposed in 2009 in the U.S. than in any year since capital punishment was reinstated in 1976. In the 1980s and '90s, states consistently sent more than 300 prisoners per year to death row. The total this year, according to DPIC, will be 106. This continues a steady trend going back most of the decade, and it extends even to Texas, the leading death-penalty state, where juries reliably sent 30 or more convicted killers per year to death row. That number fell to single digits this year: nine.

Many factors play a part in the fading importance of capital punishment. The drop in the number of death sentences reflects a drop in the murder rate. Many states have adopted life-without-parole terms as alternative sentencing, and both prosecutors and juries have embraced the option. Also, DPIC executive director Richard Dieter theorizes that in tough economic times, states are reluctant to take on the high costs of capital cases — the special sentencing hearings, the mandatory reviews and the nearly inevitable years of appeals. The DPIC report cites the example of California, where death sentences were up this year but none of the state's 690 death-row inmates were executed. The cash-strapped state is spending $137 million per year, according to one estimate, on its stymied death-penalty system and is making plans to build a special facility to house its enormous death-row population, at a cost of some $400 million.

The White Rose - "We will not be silent"

The White Rose (German: die Weiße Rose) was a non-violent/intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to dictator Adolf Hitler's regime.

The six core members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and they were executed by decapitation in 1943. The text of their sixth leaflet was smuggled by Helmuth James Graf von Moltke out of Germany through Scandinavia to Britain, and in July 1943 copies of it were dropped over Germany by Allied planes, retitled "The Manifesto of the Students of Munich."[1]

Today, the members of the White Rose are honoured in Germany as amongst its greatest heroes, since they opposed the Third Reich in the face of almost certain death.

Origin

In 1941 Hans Scholl read a copy of a sermon by an outspoken critic of the Nazi regime, Bishop August von Galen, decrying the euthanasia policies (extended that same year to the concentration camps[2]) which the Nazis maintained would protect the European gene pool.[3] Horrified by the Nazi policies, Sophie obtained permission to reprint the sermon and distribute it at the University of Munich as the group's first leaflet prior to their formal organization.[3]

Under Gestapo interrogation, Hans Scholl gave several explanations for the origin of the name "The White Rose," and suggested he may have chosen it while he was under the emotional influence of an obscure 19th century poem with the same name by German poet Clemens Brentano. Most scholars, as well as the German public, have taken this answer at face value. Earlier, before these Gestapo transcripts surfaced, Annette Dumbach and Jud Newborn speculated briefly that the origin might have come from a German novel Die Weiße Rose- The White Rose, published in Berlin in 1929 and written by B. Traven, the German author of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Dumbach and Newborn said there was a chance that Hans Scholl and Alex Schmorell had read this. They also wrote that the symbol of the white rose was intended to represent purity and innocence in the face of evil.[4]

In February 2006, however, Dr. Jud Newborn authored an essay entitled, "Solving Mysteries: The Secret of 'The White Rose'," originally intended as an Afterword to his co-authored book,[5] In this essay he argues that Hans Scholl's response to the Gestapo was intentionally misleading in order to protect Josef Soenghen, the anti-Nazi bookseller who had provided the White Rose members with a safe meeting place for the exchange of information and to receive occasional financial contributions. Soenghen kept a stash of banned books hidden in his store. Dr. Newborn also looked into the content of B. Traven's The White Rose, arguing that the novel, banned by the Nazis in 1933, provided evidence of origin of the group's name.

Has Atlantis been found in the Caribbean?

From Lost city of Atlantis discovered? Grainy images show city-like formations at the bottom of the Caribbean

A group of 'undersea archaeologists' have become the latest to claim they have uncovered the lost city of Atlantis.

The scientists - who have refused to identify themselves - have released a series of images taken beneath the Caribbean.

They insist the snaps show what appear to be the ruins of a city that could pre-date Egypt's pyramids, which appeared after 2600BC.

They even told a French newspaper that one of the structures appears to be a pyramid.

Now the anonymous group wants to raise funds to explore the secret location where the images were taken.

They would not reveal the exact location, however, saying only that it was somewhere in the Caribbean Sea.

The claims have raised eyebrows on the internet, though sceptics refrained from debunking them entirely - just in case.
