A Message From Anonymous To The Global (R)evolution

FREE-THINKERS, HYPERBOREANS, BUILDERS OF THE FUTURE,

We are Anonymous.

First and foremost, we would like to congratulate you from the bottom of our hearts: What we, Anonymous, the people, have accomplished in just give or take 10 months, has exceeded even our wildest aspirations and our most endearing dreams. Yes indeed: we had gambled on more than we could hope for - and yet we have been able to harvest even more. This in itself is already a tiny miracle, and can only make one feel humbled towards the virtually limitless potential and capabilities of our collective self: the hive.

However, it is of the utmost importance to keep in mind that this is only the beginning of the struggle we have chosen to pick up. While we now have occupied the planet, so far we have only taken our starting grounds - a great and difficult task still lies ahead of us: we now have to create the principles and procedures that we want our new world to be organized upon - and we have to do it swiftly, so as to take the old world by surprise. We will have to externalize the hivemind and re-conceptualize it into the real-life reality of a truly direct, participatory democracy - and we have to do it before the old world sees the chance to 'recuperate' our 'movement' and lull the masses back to sleep.

This means we will have to set up new institutions today - according to the principles of the world we want tomorrow. We will have to create and BE a new world while the old world has not yet fully withered away. For true greatness is only achieved by they who don't ask for permission - and true freedom is not something that can be given or bestowed upon us - it can only be occupied, conquered, taken up and be (re)claimed.

This means we will have to make ourselves as independent and autonomous from the old world as in any way imaginable. However, we can only do this if all of us cooperate and work and share together: Set up local general assemblies and start organizing your community. Withdraw your money from the banks and - if possible - start investing in local cooperative initiatives that will be able to provide the needs of your local community. Start producing life-necessities, energy and consumer-goods in local cooperatives as much as realistically possible, and stop buying these products from the large multinationals that have monopolized our so-called 'free markets'. Start cooperative initiatives to supply your local community with public services and work out alternative ways of grass roots job creation and the local creation of 'wealth'.

Be creative! Share! Experiment! Improvise! And profit! But most of all: don't give up! It is true that a lot of good work has already been done, but so much more is cautiously showing it's silhouette at the horizon. We, Anonymous, the people, pledge to make it real...

Now show the world some loving - and be Anonymous!

You are expected.

The military response to direct action, General Kitson’s manual

From Direct Action Station:

Tom Griffin writes:

In 1971 a counter-insurgency manual set out an operational response to non-violent direct action protest movements as well as military insurgencies like the Provision IRA in Northern Ireland, drawing on the UK’s colonial experience. Today, it holds a surprise for a new reader.

General Frank Kitson’s 1971 counter-insurgency manual Low Intensity Operations [12] has long been of interest to students of the Northern Ireland Troubles. Within months of its publication, its author was commanding 39 Brigade in Belfast where he pioneered the use of the Parachute Regiment [13] as shock troops, and of plain-clothes ‘counter-gangs’ [14] to combat paramilitary groups.

However, what struck me most when I obtained a copy recently was not the book’s obvious significance for such controversial episodes, but its striking relevance to events in Britain in recent weeks.

That’s because Kitson gives considerable attention to the question of how a government can combat a campaign of non-violent direct action. He devotes a whole chapter to the subject, despite showing considerable scepticism about the value of direct action as a tactic:

“It is rare to find large numbers of people who are so interested in a political cause that they are prepared to abandon their work and sacrifice their recreational time merely to stand around in a group being troublesome to the government on the off chance that it will make concessions in some direction which will probably bring them little personal benefit or satisfaction. In fact only the hard core organizers are likely to be sufficiently dedicated to behave in this way, and such people are normally viewed with suspicion by the normal working man or housewife and even by the majority of the student population.”
Kitson argued that to overcome this problem, the hard core organizers need to mobilise an intermediate group of ‘politically conscious idealists’ in sufficient numbers to goad the authorities into discrediting themselves by some violent action.

Kitson wrote primarily on the basis of his experiences in Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus, dealing with highly centralised communist or nationalist movements, in situations where direct action was ultimately replaced by outright insurgency.

He did recognise that the students involved in the then recent events of May 1968 in France were resistant to centralised control, but he regarded this as illustrating a general weakness of direct action, its dependence on mobilising large numbers of ordinary people.

For Kitson, the workers and students of 1968 had been bought off with concessions on wages and universities, frustrating the larger socialist ambitions of the organisers. His practical recommendations are a generalisation of this model:

“In practical terms the most promising line of approach lies in separating the mass of those engaged in the campaign from the leadership by the judicious promise of concessions, at the same time imposing a period of calm by the use of government forces backed up by statements to the effect that most of the concessions can only be implemented once the life of the country returns to normal. Although with an eye to world opinion, and to the need to retain the allegiance of the people, no more force than is necessary for containing the situation should be used, conditions can be made reasonably uncomfortable for the population as a whole, in order to provide an incentive for a return to normal life and to act as a deterrent towards a resumption of the campaign.
Having once succeeded in providing a breathing space by these means, it is most important to do three further things quickly. The first is to implement the promised concessions quickly so as to avoid allegations of bad faith which may enable the subversive element to regain control over certain sections of the people. The second is to discover and neutralise the subversive element. The third is to associate as many prominent members of the population, especially those who have been engaged in non-violent action, with the government. This last technique is known in America as co-optation..”

Animal Rights: The Brown Dog Riots of 1907

It can be surprising to discover that the largest, most controversial and violent riot in Britain concerning the emotive issue of animal rights occurred not in recent years, but in 1907 – and that the most vociferous and heated protagonists were not those demonstrating on behalf of animals, but medical students defending their cruel, barbaric and unregulated scientific experiments. The so-called Brown Dog Affair – which saw its worst night of rioting in Trafalgar Square, as some 1,000 rowdy medical students clashed with police, suffragettes, trade unionists and working-class animal lovers – raged for seven years and was one of the most divisive issues in Edwardian London.

John Robb at Global Guerrillas has written a couple of pieces on “manufactured” tribes. That is, using a tribal organizational structure to advance a group’s goals and protect its members. He writes:
How do you manufacture a strong community that protects, defends and advances the interests of its members? You build a tribe. Tribal organization is the most survivable of all organizational types and it was the dominant form for 99.99% of human history. The most important aspect of tribal organization is that it is the organizational cockroach of human history. It has proved it can withstand the onslaught of the harshest of environments. Global depression? No problem.

The Awakening in America

A radical situation is a collective awakening. . . . In such situations people become much more open to new perspectives, readier to question previous assumptions, quicker to see through the usual cons. . . . People learn more about society in a week than in years of academic “social studies” or leftist “consciousness raising.” . . . Everything seems possible — and much more is possible. People can hardly believe what they used to put up with in “the old days.” . . . Passive consumption is replaced by active communication. Strangers strike up lively discussions on street corners. Debates continue round the clock, new arrivals constantly replacing those who depart for other activities or to try to catch a few hours of sleep, though they are usually too excited to sleep very long. While some people succumb to demagogues, others start making their own proposals and taking their own initiatives. Bystanders get drawn into the vortex, and go through astonishingly rapid changes. . . . Radical situations are the rare moments when qualitative change really becomes possible. Far from being abnormal, they reveal how abnormally repressed we usually are; they make our “normal” life seem like sleepwalking.

—Ken Knabb, The Joy of Revolution

The “Occupy” movement that has swept across the country over the last four weeks is already the most significant radical breakthrough in America since the 1960s. And it is just beginning.

It started on September 17, when some 2000 people came together in New York City to “Occupy Wall Street” in protest against the increasingly glaring domination of a tiny economic elite over the “other 99%.” The participants began an ongoing tent-city type occupation of a park near Wall Street (redubbed Liberty Plaza in a salute to the Tahrir Square occupation in Egypt) and formed a general assembly that has continued to meet every day. Though at first almost totally ignored by the mainstream media, this action rapidly began to inspire similar occupations in hundreds of cities across the country and many others around the world.

The ruling elite don’t know what’s hit them and have suddenly been thrown on the defensive, while the clueless media pundits try to dismiss the movement for failing to articulate a coherent program or list of demands. The participants have of course expressed numerous grievances, grievances that are obvious enough to anyone who has been paying attention to what’s been going on in the world. But they have wisely avoided limiting themselves to a single demand, or even just a few demands, because it has become increasingly clear that every aspect of the system is problematic and that all the problems are interrelated. Instead, recognizing that popular participation is itself an essential part of any real solution, they have come up with a disarmingly simple yet eminently subversive proposal, urging the people of the world to “Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone. . . . Join us and make your voices heard!” (Declaration of the Occupation of New York City).

Almost as clueless are those doctrinaire radicals who remain on the sidelines glumly predicting that the movement will be coopted or complaining that it hasn’t instantly adopted the most radical positions. They of all people should know that the dynamic of social movements is far more important than their ostensible ideological positions. Revolutions arise out of complex processes of social debate and interaction that happen to reach a critical mass and trigger a chain reaction — processes very much like what we are seeing at this moment. The “99%” slogan may not be a very precise “class analysis,” but it’s a close enough approximation for starters, an excellent meme to cut through a lot of traditional sociological jargon and make the point that the vast majority of people are subordinate to a system run by and for a tiny ruling elite. And it rightly puts the focus on the economic institutions rather than on the politicians who are merely their lackeys. The countless grievances may not constitute a coherent program, but taken as a whole they already imply a fundamental transformation of the system. The nature of that transformation will become clearer as the struggle develops. If the movement ends up forcing the system to come up with some sort of significant, New Deal-type reforms, so much the better — that will temporarily ease conditions so we can more easily push further. If the system proves incapable of implementing any significant reforms, that will force people to look into more radical alternatives.

"The National Schools of Art in Havana are works of extraordinary imagination that speak eloquently of their moment of creation. The book has played its own revolutionary role in the history of the buildings, inspiring among other things an opera, and a documentary film."

A Strategy of Lies: How the White House Fed the Public a Steady Diet of Falsehoods

The 56-page investigation was assembled by USAF Colonel (Ret.) Sam Gardiner. "Truth from These Podia: Summary of a Study of Strategic Influence, Perception Management, Strategic Information Warfare and Strategic Psychological Operations in Gulf II" identifies more than 50 stories about the Iraq war that were faked by government propaganda artists in a covert campaign to "market" the military invasion of Iraq. Gardiner has credentials. He has taught at the National War College, the Air War College and the Naval Warfare College and was a visiting scholar at the Swedish Defense College.
According to Gardiner, "It was not bad intelligence" that lead to the quagmire in Iraq, "It was an orchestrated effort that began before the war" that was designed to mislead the public and the world. Gardiner's research lead him to conclude that the US and Britain had conspired at the highest levels to plant "stories of strategic influence" that were known to be false.
The Times of London described the $200-million-plus US operation as a "meticulously planned strategy to persuade the public, the Congress, and the allies of the need to confront the threat from Saddam Hussein." The multimillion-dollar propaganda campaign run out of the White House and Defense Department was, in Gardiner's final assessment "irresponsible in parts" and "might have been illegal."
"Washington and London did not trust the peoples of their democracies to come to the right decisions," Gardiner explains. Consequently, "Truth became a casualty. When truth is a casualty, democracy receives collateral damage." For the first time in US history, "we allowed strategic psychological operations to become part of public affairs... What has happened is that information warfare, strategic influence, and strategic psychological operations pushed their way into the important process of informing the peoples of our two democracies."

Arthur M. Young: Astrology and Science (excerpt) -- A Thinking Allowed w/ Jeffrey Mishlove

http://www.thinkingallowed.com/2ayoung.html
The planets in astrology represent important distinctions concerning the different realms of reality that often become confused in science. In part one of this two-part program, Arthur M. Young states that insights about angular relationships were very important in the development of the helicoptor and led him to develop a model in which the measure formulae of physics are expressed in a manner isomorphic to the signs of the zodiac.
In part two of the DVD, Young elaborates on the difference between the planets Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, explaining how the planetary cycles of Saturn have had significance in his own life. He discusses the use of progressed charts in astrology from the perspective of systems theory in which whole cycles are embedded within each other. Astrology, he suggests, is a larger more comprehensive system than science. Scientists can benefit from studying it regardless of its application in individual horoscopes.
Arthur M. Young, born in 1905, was the inventor of the Bell Helicoptor. He was also founder of the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, California, and author of The Reflexive Universe and The Geometry of Meaning.

DemocracyNow.org - As President Obama prepares to outline a deficit-reduction plan that includes tax increases, as well as cuts to programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, anthropologist David Graeber proposes a radical solution: cancel the debt of the nation's poor. "Debts between the very wealthy or between governments can always be renegotiated and always have been throughout world history. They are not anything set in stone," says Graeber, author of "Debt: The First 5,000 Years," on Democracy Now! today. "It's generally speaking when you have debts owed by the poor to the rich, debts becomes a sacred situation, more important than anything else. The idea of renegotiating them becomes unthinkable." On the Occupy Wall Street protest, Graeber says, "If you look at who showed up [in Egypt and Spain], it was mostly young people, and most of them were people who had gone through the educational system who were deeply in debt and who found it completely impossible to find jobs. ... The system has completely failed them ... If there's going to be any kind of society worth living in, we're going to have to create it ourselves."

Reporters arrested, roughed up while covering Occupy Wall Street protests

The often violent response to the Occupy Wall Street campaign that is growing in the United States and elsewhere is affecting the freedom to inform. Reporters Without Borders condemns the arrests of reporters in recent weeks, especially in New York where the police assume the right to decide who are journalists.
On the eve of major worldwide demonstrations planned for 15 October, Reporters Without Borders urges the authorities not to resort to repressive methods, which constitute acts of censorship.

The first time Wall Street was occupied

"They lay there, clinging to one another and trying to shield the more vulnerable parts of their bodies from the blows of the nightsticks, while the police hauled them apart and dragged them bodily into waiting patrol wagons."

Sausage The Riot Dog Coming To America?

Sausage The Riot Dog (the quaint media image of him at least) may have to paddle across the Atlantic to combat the impositions of failed government, but in the meantime, perhaps we can apply a few lessons from his playbook, and focus our energies into something that truly matters…

Mainstream Media’s Coverage of Libya Disturbing

The mainstream media’s conspicuous silence about the racially motivated human rights abuses perpetrated against black Libyans and immigrants, by the NATO-backed Transitional National Council (TNC) forces in Libya, is disturbing. Similarly, the high civilian casualties of the current intense fighting in the city of Sirte seems, to a large extent, to be underplayed. Yet organisations such as Human Rights Watch have acknowledged that civilian abuses have continued and called on forces on both sides that are fighting in Sirte to minimize harm to civilians and treat all prisoners humanely.

More Americans than Chinese can’t put food on the table

The number of Americans who lack access to basic necessities like food and health care is now higher than it was at the peak of the Great Recession, a survey released Thursday found. And in a finding that could worsen fears of U.S. decline, the share of Americans struggling to put food on the table is now three times as large as the share of the Chinese population in the same position.
