North Carolina Eugenics Board Victims Fight For Justice
Elaine Riddick's small frame heaves, her rapid, shallow breaths whistling in her throat as she forces the words out between her sobs.
"So what am I worth?" she asks the five people seated at the long table before her. "The kids that I did not have, COULD not have. What are THEY worth?"
"Priceless," Tony Riddick whispers as he gently rubs his mother's back.
Elaine Riddick has been asking these same questions, in one forum or another, for the past 40 years. This most recent appearance in late June was before the Governor's Task Force to Determine the Method of Compensation for Victims of North Carolina's Eugenics Board.
As far as Riddick is concerned, she tells the panel, she was raped twice. Once by the man who fathered her son, and again by the Eugenics Board of the State of North Carolina, which deemed her, at age 14, unfit to procreate.
"I am NOT feebleminded," she shouts, turning to face the packed hearing room. "I've never BEEN feebleminded."
"No," says her son, standing beside her behind the podium.
Tears streaming down her face, she says, "They cut me open like I was a HOG."
Between 1929 and 1974, North Carolina sterilized more than 7,600 individuals in the name of "improving" the state's human stock. By the time the program was halted, the majority of those neutered were young, black, poor women – like Riddick.
In many ways, Riddick's has become the face of the movement to compensate victims of what most now acknowledge as a dark, misguided era in the state's – and nation's – past. From her decision to sue the state in federal court nearly four decades ago to this most recent baring of her soul, she has refused to simply fade from view.

He urged the pope and prime minister to attend a peace conference in Geneva. But talks broke down before they began when an Irish agent discovered that the Vatican had secret plans to invade Ireland.

The Irish prime minister accused the Vatican of launching a new crusade and pledged to resist any effort to occupy Irish soil. Paraphrasing Winston Churchill, he said: “We shall fight on the beaches, in the hills, valleys, villages, peat bogs, pubs, and parks to defend our sacred land.”

Just made this video to remember Brian Haw, who passed away last night, and all victims of war. I would like to remember Brian by calling people to stop the DSEi Arms Fair. More info here: http://www.stopthearmsfair.org.uk/
I found Brian a continual inspiration, from having met him at the start of the protests and dismissed him a bit to seeing the man everyewhere and thinking WOW I love that guy. Brian always said "They're my kids!" When referring to the children being bombed in Iraq and Afghanistan and he was definitely an inspiration to me in my attitude.

This idea came from Prof. Shishir Nagaraja, professor for IT Security at the Institute for Information Technology in Delhi (IIIT), after seeing how public authorities had used pictures of demonstrations to hunt down those people that had been carrying cameras.

CRIMINALIZATION OF NON-STATE ACTOR TORTURE
Proposed by the CFUW International Relations Committee....
RESOLVED, That the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) urge
the
Government of Canada to amend, immediately, the Criminal Code of
Canada to include torture committed by private individuals and
organizations, (non-state actors) as a specific and distinct criminal
offence.
RESOLVED: That CFUW urge the Government of Canada to:
I. Exercise due diligence by initiating into Canadian policies and
practices without delay, all appropriate measures to ensure that no
person is subjected to torture by non-state actors; II. Respect the
priority of gender-sensitive frameworks on the United Nations agendas,
given that women and girls are disproportionally affected by extreme
forms of violence; and III. Uphold Canada’s commitments to United
Nations human rights instruments to which Canada is a signatory.
