Freemasons in midst of popularity, membership boom

The secretive society gains a higher, hipper profile as younger men seek out a place for fraternal bonding.
By Adam Tschorn, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
May 18, 2008
IN LOS FELIZ, across from a 7-Eleven on North Vermont Avenue, a few dozen men in their early 20s to late 80s share a dinner behind closed doors. Some wear full tuxedos with bow ties and jeweled cuff links, some have shoulder-length hair, and others wear open-collared shirts that reveal the slightest filigree of tattoo arching across their chests.

Over Italian food, retired lawyers and judges sit elbow-to-elbow with owners of scrap metal yards and vintage clothing boutiques. They hold forth on philosophy, the weather; they rib each other and joke about saving room for cannoli. As they reach for seconds, they reveal skull-cracking rings emblazoned with a compass and a square.

Meet the millennial Masons. As secret societies go, it is one of the oldest and most famous. Its enrollment roster includes Louis Armstrong and Gerald Ford, and it has been depicted in movies such as "The Da Vinci Code" and "National Treasure." Once more than 4 million strong (back in the 1950s), it has been in something of a popularity free-fall ever since. Viewed with suspicion as a bastion of antiquated values and forced camaraderie, the Masons have seen membership rolls plummet more than 60% to just 1.5 million in 2006.

Only now the trend seems to be reversing itself, and nowhere more noticeably than in Southern California. The reasons seem clear. In another Masonic Hall, this one on La Cienega, a Sri Lankan-born banker, a sunglasses-wearing Russian immigrant and a continent-hopping Frenchman break bread, poke at their salads and chat about their health.

"For a time it looked as if Masonry was going into a sharp decline, if not the death throes," said UCLA history professor Margaret C. Jacob, who has written extensively about the fraternal order. "But it looks like it may be making a comeback."

That's because the Freemasons, whose tenets forbid soliciting or recruiting members, have enthusiastically embraced the Internet as a way to leverage curiosity about an organization with its roots in Europe's medieval stonemasons guilds. Freemasonry today sees itself as a thinking man's salon, a learned society with a philanthropic bent.

"We had a record number of new members last year," said Allan Casalou, grand secretary of the Grand Lodge of California. "We added 2,000 men, which is the most since 1998 and our seventh straight year of membership increases."

And, to paraphrase that Oldsmobile campaign, these definitely aren't your father's Freemasons. They are bar owners, male models and olive-oil brokers. They are men like Zulu, an L.A. tattoo artist with a swirling Maori-inspired design inked across his face and a panoply of metal piercing his ears, nose and face. They are men like Jonathan Kanarek, who runs a men's vintage clothing store on Hollywood Boulevard and whose retro chic wardrobe of polka-dot ascots, glen-plaid jackets and smartly pressed pocket squares earned him a spot on Esquire magazine's 2007 list of best-dressed real men in America. And they are men like Daemon Hillin, whose surfer-dude looks and blinding white smile can be found on Japanese TV, where he plays sidekick and comic foil to the Japanese version of the Hilton sisters.

They are also all men who want to be part of an all-for-one and one-for-all brotherhood built on shared ideals, philosophical pursuits and a penchant for rings, aprons and funny hats. As Zulu bluntly put it: "I joined because I was looking for people to hang with that were like-minded but also hip and cool, and a lot of tattoo artists tend to be drunks and druggies."

Hillin, who originally joined the Masons in Temecula, moved to L.A. and is interested in the Santa Monica-Palisades Lodge No. 307, one of the youngest and most diverse congregations in the state (the average age of active brothers is just 33). The lodge's senior deacon, Jim Warren, calls it " 'Star Trek' without the chicks." "We have every possible national origin, ethnicity and religious denomination you could imagine," he said.

Warren credits the Internet. "We were one the first lodges in the state to have a website up," he said. "That led to a huge spike in membership."

Other lodges followed suit, putting up their own sites and drawing a crowd. That's how prospective Mason Johnny Royal ended up at the door of Elysian Lodge No. 418 last month. Intrigued by the distinctive Masonic architecture that graces most halls, the 31-year-old publicist with sideburns to his chin and hair to his shoulders and a Renaissance lute player tattoo on his right forearm hit the Web.

What he read about the Masonic ideals -- wisdom, strength, beauty and the pursuit of knowledge -- made him decide to pursue membership. "My generation wants to be part of something beyond itself," Royal said. "I want to learn; I want to participate."

The Web generation

THE INTERNET hasn't only made it easier to learn about the Freemasons, Casalou says, it's changed the type of men coming forward. "There is so much information on the Internet that by the time someone comes to a lodge to seek membership, they already know a lot about Masonry," he said. "Which is a big departure from previous generations. And it means they are more likely to be active participants."

Zulu became curious about Freemasonry after tattooing Masonic symbology on several clients. He joined five years ago at age 39 and now serves as webmaster and senior warden of North Hollywood Lodge No. 542. He has also gone on to become both a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner (Masonic membership is a prerequisite for both), and next year he will become the leader of his lodge. "I'll be the first black worshipful master in the lodge's history," he said, using the proper term of respect.

But he probably won't be the last. Because California's contingent of Freemasons is expected to grow, the average age of its members, once 71 and now 65, is expected to drop. By 2018, as Casalou predicts, the state will be awash in 55-year-old pre-retirement Masons giving each other secret handshakes, wearing ritual aprons and invoking the Grand Architect of the Universe.

The Internet continues to help. Zulu said that he gets at least four e-mails a week from prospective Masons around the globe who see his tattooed and pierced visage at the lodge website and want to be reassured such an alternative look isn't a barrier to membership.

"Yeah, I think it's going to become hip and chic to be a Mason," Zulu said. "And that could be a dangerous thing."

This conference will bring together international Masonic leaders comprised of high-level officials in government, business and civic service. Specifically, large delegations from Africa, Latin America and Europe are expected to be in attendance. The setting will be to discuss how Freemasonry can utilize its position to promote universal understanding, enlightened ideas, and goodwill globally.

Members of the press are invited to cover keynote speakers, banquets, award ceremonies and the World War II Memorial wreath-laying, commemorating the Freemasons who died during WWII. Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) will be honored during the conference with Freemasonry's Medal of Freedom for his commitment to preserving freedom and liberty worldwide. Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) will be awarded for his lifetime dedication to civil rights. A number of educational scholarships will also be presented at the closing banquet.

As the world's oldest and largest fraternal society with more than half of its membership in the United States, American Freemasonry has a rich history of involvement in the founding of America and her development for over two centuries. The 9th World Conference of Masonic Grand Lodges will be the largest international gathering of leaders of Freemasonry in Washington D.C. since the laying of the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol building by President and Freemason George Washington on September 18, 1793.

Rubin's poisoned chalice (The Shape of U.S. Populism - Part 5, Asia Times)

It was Robert Rubin, special economic assistant to Clinton and later Treasury secretary, who worked out what has come to be known as Rubinomics, the strategy of dollar hegemony through the promotion of unregulated globalization of financial markets based on a fiat dollar that also forced deregulation on the US financial market. (See US dollar hegemony has got to go, Asia Times Online, April 11, 2002.)

The argument that financial market regulation would reduce US competitiveness because it would force US financial institutions to relocate overseas had assumed an air of immaculate logic in the ideological context of neo-liberal globalization during the Clinton years. That neo-liberal mentality set the stage for US government abdication of regulatory responsibility over the financial sector and allowed the free market to move towards the inescapable path of eventual self-destruction, despite historical experience of the Roaring Twenties and the New Deal having shown the need for regulation to rein in the suicidal excesses of financial free markets.

The neo-liberal strategy was set in motion with the help of an ever-accommodating Federal Reserve to supply more liquidity to foil even the slightest stock market correction on what Fed chairman Alan Greenspan observed as "irrational exuberance". Since for almost two decades the finance sector had grown faster than the real economy, most of the excess liquidity injected by the Fed went to develop serial debt bubbles that simply got bigger and bigger each time through financial innovations.

These ever-bigger bubbles were generated by increasingly sophisticated and complex debt instruments that carried synthetic credit ratings structured in linked hierarchies of risk exposures and marketed worldwide as "safe" investments to supposedly nondiscretionary conservative institutional investors managing the money of clients who normally were not in any position to take such risks. Such triple-rated "safe" investment-grade instruments were theoretically protected by a solid base of a large number of dispensable financial frontline yeomen instruments. The structured finance regime nevertheless mandates that when enough of the frontline yeomen die, the lords who depend on a tolerable yeomen survival rate for protection also fall into jeopardy.

Excessive cash injected into the bubble economy
Through much of the Clinton administration, the Greenspan Fed kept short-term interest rates too low for too long for a healthy economy, notwithstanding the alleged safety provided by sophisticated hedging of risks. Towards the end of the Clinton presidency, an abnormal term structure on interest rates was created in early 2000 by the Greenspan Fed finally raising short-term Fed Funds rate targets to fight inflation while the Treasury under Larry Summers was pushing down long-term rates by buying back 30-year Treasury bonds with funds from a Federal budget surplus derived from a debt bubble, flooding the market with excessive cash.

As all market participants know, an inverted rate curve is a classic signal for recession down the road. Yet silly talk of the "end of the business cycle" was extravagantly entertained by neo-liberal government economists, along with silly talk of the "end of history" by neo-conservative superpower strategists. The so-called "Goldilocks" economy fantasy of not too hot, not too cold, but just right, was born, along with the superpower fantasy that Goldilocks will pay for costly foreign wars of moral imperialism around the world without hurting the domestic economy. Goldilocks was called upon to provide the US with both guns and butter.

George W Bush won the November 2000 presidential election along with the bursting of the Clinton debt bubble. The Greenspan Fed again came to the rescue by turning on the fiat money spigot to fund a housing bubble mistaken as a miraculous boom, applauded by a grateful Congress overtaken with unquestioning awe and blind adulation normally reserved only for living gods. (See The Presidential Election Cycle Theory and the Fed, Asia Times Online, February 24, 2004).

The policy of moral imperialism brought spectacular terrorist attacks on the US homeland, forcing the Bush administration, less than nine months in office, to turn Clinton's foreign war of moral imperialism into a global war on terrorism that some have estimated will cost up to US$2 trillion or 20% of US gross domestic product, a cost even a Goldilocks economy cannot afford. The 9/11 2001 terrorist attacks on the US homeland gave the Fed a convenient excuse to flood the market with massive liquidity. The Goldilocks economy got a new lease on life from the global war on terrorism, allowing structured finance to blossom as a regime of global financial terror. The destruction of 9/11 goes pale against the still-unfolding destruction of the 2007 credit crunch.

Fungi lock depleted uranium out of harm's way

Saith the New Scientist :

Humble fungi found in most back gardens could help clean up battlefields contaminated with depleted uranium.

At present, sites can be partial decontaminated by physically collecting and disposing of fragments from shells. However, radioactive particles and dust from explosions remain in the soil, preventing full reclamation.

Now, a research team in Scotland has established that common fungi can grow on and chemically lock away the offending uranium. As their hyphal filaments sprawled across fragments of depleted uranium, the tubules gradually became coated in a yellowy mineral.

This, it turned out, locked the uranium into a chemical form inaccessible to biological organisms, and unlikely to dissolve into surface waters.

At twice the density of lead, depleted uranium is added to weapons to give them extra force to penetrate targets. But the complete fallout from exploding missiles is impossible to collect physically. This means that hazardous radioactive uranium-235 in the material, which can cause kidney toxicity and has been linked with nerve damage and lung cancer, can persist in the environment for decades.
