Preserving the Island of World Peace

By Noam Chomsky and Matthew Hoey

There is an island off the coast of South Korea - Jeju island - that is arguably the most idyllic on the planet. It is internationally recognized as the “Island of World Peace” and is home to more UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites than any single geographic location on earth. In the years leading up to the Korean War, it was the scene of virtual genocide, referred to in Korea as the Sasam, April 3 Uprising. One in five residents on the island was killed and 90% of the villages were burned to the ground. These barbaric crimes were committed by the South Korean police and military under a U.S. military mandate to begin what would be known later as the “scorch the earth campaign.” Today Jeju Island is again threatened by joint U.S.-South Korean militarization and aggression.

Island residents and peace activists are resisting energetically, risking their freedom and lives to prevent the construction of a naval base on what many consider to be the most beautiful coastline on the island. This military base is to be home to both U.S. and South Korean naval vessels and a sea-based Aegis ballistic missile defense system. The planned facility would have a capacity for two submarines, 20 large destroyers and up to two aircraft carriers. The purpose of this military facility is to project force towards China and to provide a forward operating installation in the event of a military conflict between the U.S. and China. The location of this base is Gangjeong village, a small farming and fishing village that has reluctantly become the site of an epic battle for peace.

The last thing the world needs is a military confrontation between the U.S. and China. On that dreaded eventuality, there is no need to elaborate. In terms of its implications, what is now taking place on Jeju island counts as one of the most critical struggles against a potentially devastating war in Asia, and the deeply-rooted institutional structures that are driving the world towards even more bitter conflict than is raging in all too many places today.

UK police seize computers of skeptic blogger in England

The first blogger to break the Climategate2 story has had a visit from the police and has had his computers seized. Tallbloke’s Talkshop first reported on CG2 due to the timing of the release being overnight in the USA. Today he was raided by six UK police (Norfolk Constabulary and Metropolitan police) and several of his computers were seized as evidence. He writes:

After surveying my ancient stack of Sun Sparcstations and PII 400 pc’s, they ended up settling for two laptops and an adsl broadband router. I’m blogging this post via my mobile.

That means his cellphone. In his blog report are all the details. including actions in the US involving WordPress and the US Department of Justice. Jeff Id at The Air Vent also has a report here.

Junkyard Gives Up Secret Accounts of Massacre in Iraq

The 400 pages of interrogations, once closely guarded as secrets of war, were supposed to have been destroyed as the last American troops prepare to leave Iraq. Instead, they were discovered along with reams of other classified documents, including military maps showing helicopter routes and radar capabilities, by a reporter for The New York Times at a junkyard outside Baghdad. An attendant was burning them as fuel to cook a dinner of smoked carp.

The documents — many marked secret — form part of the military’s internal investigation, and confirm much of what happened at Haditha, a Euphrates River town where Marines killed 24 Iraqis, including a 76-year-old man in a wheelchair, women and children, some just toddlers.

Haditha became a defining moment of the war, helping cement an enduring Iraqi distrust of the United States and a resentment that not one Marine has been convicted.

But the accounts are just as striking for what they reveal about the extraordinary strains on the soldiers who were assigned here, their frustrations and their frequently painful encounters with a population they did not understand. In their own words, the report documents the dehumanizing nature of this war, where Marines came to view 20 dead civilians as not “remarkable,” but as routine.

Could the U.S. Government Start Reading Your Emails?

Cherie Anderson runs a travel company in southern California, and she's convinced the federal government is reading her emails. But she's all right with that.

"I assume it's part of the Patriot Act and I really don't mind," she says. "I figure I'm probably boring them to death."

It's likely Anderson is not alone in her concerns that the government may be monitoring what Americans say, write, and read. And now there may be even more to worry about: a newly revealed security research project called PRODIGAL -- the Proactive Discovery of Insider Threats Using Graph Analysis and Learning -- which has been built to scan IMs, texts and emails . . . and can read approximately a quarter billion of them a day.

"Every time someone logs on or off, sends an email or text, touches a file or plugs in a USB key, these records are collected within the organization," David Bader, a professor at the Georgia Tech School of Computational Science and Engineering and a principal investigator on the project, told FoxNews.com.

PRODIGAL scans those records for behavior -- emails to unusual recipients, certain words cropping up, files transferred from unexpected servers -- that changes over time as an employee "goes rogue." The system was developed at Georgia Tech in conjunction with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the Army's secretive research arm that works on everything from flying cars to robotic exoskeletons.

Iceland Arrests Former CEO Of Failed Bank

Iceland's special prosecutor has taken Larus Welding, the former head of the failed Glitnir Bank, into custody, Reuters reports.

Glitnir Bank was the first of the top three Icelandic commercial banks to fail in 2008.

Former director of market trade Jóhannes Baldursson and former broker Ingi Rafn Júlíusson were also taken into custody and between ten and twenty other former employees of Glitnir Bank were also investigated.

They are expected to be held for a week, apparently to prevent tampering with evidence or witness coercion.

Police go military

US police officers have used heavy-handed techniques and high-tech weaponry to take down alleged criminals, as most evident in the brutal beat-downs of Occupy Wall Street protesters. An onslaught of attacks with pepper-spray, tear gas guns and batons are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the arsenal of arms that the police are pulverizing peaceful protesters with. Is freedom of speech worth pursuing when those that supposedly allow it are destroying demonstrators with blow after blow? Marina Portnaya talks about the militarization of the small town law enforcement.

The Return Of Debtor’s Prisons: Thousands Of Americans Jailed For Not Paying Their Bills

Federal imprisonment for unpaid debt has been illegal in the U.S. since 1833. It’s a practice people associate more with the age of Dickens than modern-day America. But as more Americans struggle to pay their bills in the wake of the recession, collection agencies are using harsher methods to get their money, ushering in the return of debtor’s prisons.

NPR reports that it’s becoming increasingly common for people to serve jail time as a result of their debt. Because of “sloppy, incomplete or even false documentation,” many borrowers facing jail time don’t even know they’re being sued by creditors...

'Libyans don't trust Western cronnies ruling them'

The streets of Benghazi are once again the focal point for crowds of angry Libyans - only this time they are protesting against the country's new government. For two days, tens of thousands of protesters have been demanding more transparency and honesty from the National Transitional Council. The demonstrators are infuriated by secrecy surrounding the country's decision-making and finances. The city of Benghazi was where the NATO-backed rebellion began and ultimately ended 40 years of Colonel Muamar Gaddafi's rule. Patrick Hayes, reporter for the online magazine spiked, told RT Libyan people have finally realized the NTC falls short of representing their interests.

Future Riot Shields Will Suffocate Protestors with Low Frequency Speakers

It's not the first crowd control tool to use sound waves, but Raytheon's patent for a new type of riot shield that produces low frequency sound waves to disrupt the respiratory tract and hinder breathing, sounds a little scary.

Crowd control tools like the LRAD Sound Cannon emit bursts of loud and annoying sounds that can induce headaches and nausea. But Raytheon's non-lethal pressure shield creates a pulsed pressure wave that resonates the upper respiratory tract of a human, hindering breathing and eventually incapacitating the target. The patent points out that the sound waves being generated are actually not that powerful, so while protestors might collapse from a lack of oxygen reaching their brains, their eardrums won't be damaged in the process. Phew!

China's epic hangover begins

It is hard to obtain good data in China, but something is wrong when the country's Homelink property website can report that new home prices in Beijing fell 35pc in November from the month before. If this is remotely true, the calibrated soft-landing intended by Chinese authorities has gone badly wrong and risks spinning out of control.

The growth of the M2 money supply slumped to 12.7pc in November, the lowest in 10 years. New lending fell 5pc on a month-to-month basis. The central bank has begun to reverse its tightening policy as inflation subsides, cutting the reserve requirement for lenders for the first time since 2008 to ease liquidity strains.

The question is whether the People's Bank can do any better than the US Federal Reserve or Bank of Japan at deflating a credit bubble.

Chinese stocks are flashing warning signs. The Shanghai index has fallen 30pc since May. It is off 60pc from its peak in 2008, almost as much in real terms as Wall Street from 1929 to 1933.

Greek Creditor Committee Said Near Hiring Blackstone, Law Firms

A steering committee representing global banks and insurers is close to hiring Blackstone Group LP and two law firms to advise it on debt-swap talks with Greece, according to two people familiar with the matter.

A formal engagement with Blackstone, White & Case LLP and Allen & Overy LLP may be completed as early as this week, said one of the people, who declined to be identified because talks are private. The steering committee was formed last month by a private creditor-investor group and is conducting negotiations on the voluntary debt swap with Greek and European authorities.

Creditors are working with the advisers to limit their losses in a debt restructuring after already agreeing to accept a 50 percent writedown on the face value of their Greek sovereign holdings. The steering committee, which includes representatives from AXA SA, Commerzbank AG, ING Groep NV and National Bank of Greece SA, is seeking to reach an agreement on the details of a swap in early January, one person said.

Are we becoming a police state? Five things that have civil liberties advocates nervous

Is our Constitution under siege?

Many civil liberties advocates fear it might be. They’re worried about a provision tucked into the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, approved by the Senate last week, that would allow the military to detain without a trial any American citizen accused of being a terrorist, or of supporting terrorists who plot attacks against the United States. The ACLU called the proposal “an extreme position that will forever change our country.”

The indefinite detention provision is just one of many trends in policing and law enforcement that have civil liberties advocates alarmed. New external threats, as well as technological advancements, are posing new challenges to our Constitutional rights, advocates say. Policymakers are debating those issues in Congress and in the courts right now, and the decisions they make could have fundamental consequences for what it means to be an American.

Cyber war accelerates between Iran and US

RT’s ongoing investigation of American drone aircraft being downed as a possible result of a cyber attack has been accentuated by recent confirmations by way of a documentary out of Mexico.

The Spanish-language television network Univision has aired a program in which undercover footage allegedly shows Iranian officials discussing ways to go about an attack on America’s infrastructure, specifically attempting to recruit Mexican computer hackers to target the Department of Defense and the CIA’s computer systems.

According to the Washington Times, US officials are now investigating reports that authorities from Iran and Venezuela plotted cyber attacks against America’s military, in what comes as the latest revelation in a quickly unraveling story of cyber war escalating between Tehran and Washington. In the most recent news break, however, a front to the south of the United States could be opening up as Iran tries to take down the American military with the aid of hackers living only next door.

The Times’ report alleges that hackers were discussing potential attacks on the DoD and Central Intelligence Agency. This news comes days after the United States managed to lose contact with two high-tech drone aircraft belonging to the CIA, one two weeks ago over Iran and one this Tuesday over the Indian Ocean island of Seychelles.

In the case of the RQ170 Sentinel craft captured by Tehran, that drone was dispatched from Creech Air Force Base in the state of Nevada. Earlier this year, RT reported that a key-logger virus infiltrated the cockpits of crafts in the base, with Air Force personnel left in the dark until days after the infection took hold. Military personnel later shrugged the incident off as a nuisance and nothing more, but with two drones in two weeks now mysteriously going off the radar, American eyes are now looking towards Tehran — and perhaps a partnership with international hackers — as the threat of an all-out cyber war escalates.

Operation Green Rights

Anonymous began as an idea, an idea that unites the people of the world in the struggle for human rights and freedom. The same ideals that led to the birth of this new faction of Anonymous.
Operation Green Rights is a summary of our frustration at seeing the human race enslaved god's money, for which commits murder, exploit and oppress people and goes against the principles of democracy and human respect that should be the basis of any modern civilized country. We have seen wars carried out for the black gold, subject peoples dictatorships convenient for trade agreements, billions spent on research and nuclear war and cut funding for research on renewable energy and oil tankers sunk that cause planetary damage.
In addition, global warming, caused by these policies, it is a reality that we must be aware. The glaciers are melting, tides rise, the ozone hole is growing, the climate changes, changing climatic conditions, animal species become extinct ..
The current global policies of many large corporations and many governments are trampling on our rights and those of every other living being, only in exchange for money.
We at Operation Green Rights say stop about this!
Operation Green Rights wants for our children a life in a civilized world that welcomes them with open arms and show respect for life and nature itself. We want that Mother Earth will continue to live healthy and promoting life with its beauty. We want the exploitation of peoples and the blood spilled in the streets no longer in the name of greed.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.

French National Front heads to Israel to stump for support ahead of election

The National Front has its roots in French fascism and it has always had a racist and anti-Semitic image, but one of its representatives is in Israel to recruit supporters.

Louis Aliot, the partner of National Front presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, is in the country trying to persuade those eligible to vote in the French presidential election to give her their vote in this spring's balloting and to boost her image en route to the Elysee Palace.

"For us this visit is a precedent," Aliot told Haaretz. "This is the first time a National Front leader has visited Israel. It's true that relations were tense for a time, but it's time to warm up the atmosphere."

Aliot is on a 48-hour trip and on Monday visited the Western Wall.

The visit was first reported on the website JSS News.

On Monday, he also met with "a few elected officials and political figures who prefer not to be named." When pressed, he confirmed that none of the elected officials were Knesset members. On Tuesday he plans to visit churches in Bethlehem.

The high point of Monday's activities was his meeting in a Jerusalem hotel with 40 French Jews he said had invited him in order to hear Le Pen's platform. Marine Le Pen is the daughter of National Front founder Jean-Marie Le Pen, a far-right nationalist and former presidential candidate who periodically made xenophobic, anti-Semitic statements.

Tomgram: Nick Turse, Did the Pentagon Help Strangle the Arab Spring?

On May 19th, President Obama finally addressed the Arab Spring in earnest. He was unambiguous about standing with the protesters and against repressive governments, asserting that “America’s interests are not hostile to people’s hopes; they’re essential to them.”

Four days earlier, the very demonstrators the president sided with had marched in Temara, Morocco. They were heading for a facility suspected of housing a secret government interrogation facility to press for political reforms. It was then that the kingdom’s security forces attacked.

"I was in a group of about 11 protesters, pursued by police in their cars," Oussama el-Khlifi, a 23-year-old protester from the capital, Rabat, told Human Rights Watch (HRW). “They forced me to say, ‘Long live the king,' and they hit me on my shoulder. When I didn't fall, they clubbed me on the head and I lost consciousness. When I regained consciousness, I found myself at the hospital, with a broken nose and an injured shoulder."

About a five-hour drive south, another gathering was taking place under far more hospitable circumstances. In the seaside city of Agadir, a ceremony marking a transfer of military command was underway. "We're here to support... bilateral engagement with one of our most important allies in the region," said Colonel John Caldwell of the U.S. Marine Corps at a gathering to mark the beginning of the second phase of African Lion, an annual joint-training exercise with Morocco’s armed forces.

U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), the Pentagon’s regional military headquarters that oversees operations in Africa, has planned 13 such major joint-training exercises in 2011 alone from Uganda to South Africa, Senegal to Ghana, including African Lion. Most U.S. training missions in the Greater Middle East are, however, carried out by Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees wars and other military activities in 20 countries in the Greater Middle East.

“Annually, USCENTCOM executes more than 40 exercises with a wide range of partner nations in the region,” a military spokesman told TomDispatch. “Due to host-nation sensitivities, USCENTCOM does not discuss the nature of many of our exercises outside our bilateral relationships.”

Of the dozens of joint-training exercises it sponsored these last years, CENTCOM would only acknowledge two by name: Leading Edge, a 30-nation exercise focused on counter-proliferation last held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in late 2010; and Eager Resolve, an annual exercise to simulate a coordinated response to a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or high yield explosive attack, involving the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council -- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

However, military documents, open-source reports, and other data analyzed by TomDispatch offer a window into the training relationships that CENTCOM refused to acknowledge. While details of these missions remain sparse at best, the results are clear: during 2011, U.S. troops regularly partnered with and trained the security forces of numerous regimes that were actively beating back democratic protests and stifling dissent within their borders.

Armscor bosses went on luxury junket to UK - David Maynier

The Democratic Alliance (DA) believes that is time to deal with General "Mojo" Motau, Chairperson of Armscor, together with his colleges on the Armscor board who seem to believe that they can zoom around the world behaving like Fortune 500 fat cats.

Members of Armscor's board recently attend the DSEI defence exhibition in the United Kingdom between 13 September 2011 and 16 September 2011.

The delegation included "Mojo" Motau, Chairperson of Armscor, and Sipho Mkwanazi, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Armscor, together with a number of non-executive directors of the Armscor board.

While on the trip no expense seems to have been spared by Armscor including business class flights, luxury hotels and the use of a limousine service in the United Kingdom.

The Chairperson of Armscor, "Mojo" Motau needs to explain to parliament:

  • Why it was necessary for the delegation to include non-executive directors including at least Dr RR Mgijima, Mr SA Msibi and Mr LW Mosiako?
  • Was it really necessary for the delegation to book rooms in luxury hotels on the same night they were flying to the United Kingdom so as not to have to wait to check-in?
  • Why were rooms booked and paid for at luxury hotels for six days when some members stayed for less than six days?
  • Why was it necessary to use a luxury limousine service to transport members of the delegation?
  • Why was it necessary for the delegation to be transported from their luxury hotels to the National Gallery in London?

10 Ridiculous Things That Make You a Terror Suspect

You thought you weren’t doing anything wrong, so why should you care about who they call a terrorist? Well, you may not believe it, but you’re likely a terror suspect in America’s new paradigm of the Land of the Fear.

The government is casting a wide net over its citizens in its search for potential threats. Now, you don’t need to actually commit a crime to be hauled away to a detention center and held without charges while you are tortured; you just need to appear suspicious by sympathizing with anti-government views to be labeled a domestic terrorist.

First, it’s important to understand the official definition of domestic terrorism in the United States. The ACLU reports that a person is a domestic terrorist if they engage in any “act dangerous to human life” that “appears to be intended to (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping.”

Although recent White House action plans claim to be targeting “violent extremism in all its forms,” the government itself is clearly guilty of countless “acts dangerous to human life intended to coerce the civilian population, to influence the policy, and to affect the conduct of a government.” But that’s for another article.

What’s more disturbing, is the government’s expansion of guilty parties to “terrorist sympathizers.” This is where the net gets really large. What exactly constitutes sympathizing with a terrorist? Is questioning the imperial foreign policy and the destruction of civil liberties, sympathizing with the enemy? In the U.S., it seems that if you don’t agree with the violence and coercion America commits, then you’re an anti-American terrorist sympathizer, as evidenced by peace organizations being added to terror watch lists.

The eleven-year fast of Irom Sharmila and the battle for freedom in India’s borderlands

From The Iron Lady by Shubh Mathur, Guernica

Only images and fragments of stories trickle out from the prison ward in Imphal, capital of the Indian state of Manipur, where Irom Sharmila has been in solitary confinement since November 2000. Very few reporters, photographers, or filmmakers manage to pass the bureaucratic and physical barriers that keep her incarcerated. Photographer Gauri Gill wrote: “I had the feeling I was in the presence of someone so gentle, so alive to injustice and suffering, that she would not be able to survive the world… Through our ninety-minute interview, she was unfailingly kind to the guards, the hospital attendants, and the doctors who came and went.” Sharmila asked the documentary filmmaker Kavita Joshi for a copy of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, as she has no access to books, newspapers, or the Internet. She still writes poetry, which her supporters circulate online.

The 39-year-old Sharmila has been fasting for eleven years to demand the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which has been in effect in her home state of Manipur since 1958. AFSPA gives the Indian military absolute powers of search, seizure, arrest, and the use of deadly force, and provides impunity to military personnel accused of abuses against the civilian population. It is the foundation of a regime of military terror that has overshadowed daily life in Manipur, and other border states in the northeast—the triangle of land between Bangladesh, Burma, and China that is only connected to the Indian diamond by a narrow corridor to West Bengal—and in Kashmir. The Indian government has interpreted Sharmila’s fast as a suicide attempt, for which the maximum sentence is a one-year jail term. Each year for the past eleven years, she has been arrested, kept in a security ward, and force-fed a mixture of vitamins and nutrients twice a day through a nose tube. At the end of each year, she is released, and then arrested the next day. Her physical frame and strength are diminished to alarming levels, but her resolve is not.

[ ... ]

Along with Sharmila, the fate of another young woman, Manorama Thangjam, has come to symbolize for Manipuris their condition under the lawlessness of Indian army rule. On the night of July 11, 2004, 32-year-old Manorama was taken from her home by soldiers of the Assam Rifles paramilitary under suspicion of being a guerrilla sympathizer—Manipur has more than thirty armed militant groups fighting for causes including independence from India, ethnic turf wars, and sometimes just plain extortion, a pattern of conflict deriving from six decades of a divide and rule policy directed from New Delhi.

Manorama was first tortured in front of her own home, while soldiers held her family at gunpoint. According to Human Rights Watch, one of the soldiers came inside the house and took from the kitchen a knife, a towel and a bucket of water. The soldiers gave the family a signed arrest memo, a measure intended to prevent disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings. It did not help. Her bullet-ridden and mutilated body was found in a field near the road a few hours later. She had been tortured and raped; her body was marked by knife slashes, and her lower body shredded with gunfire to cover the evidence of rape.

Shock as retreat of Arctic sea ice releases deadly greenhouse gas

Dramatic and unprecedented plumes of methane – a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide – have been seen bubbling to the surface of the Arctic Ocean by scientists undertaking an extensive survey of the region.

The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years.

[ ... ]

Scientists estimate that there are hundreds of millions of tonnes of methane gas locked away beneath the Arctic permafrost, which extends from the mainland into the seabed of the relatively shallow sea of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf. One of the greatest fears is that with the disappearance of the Arctic sea-ice in summer, and rapidly rising temperatures across the entire region, which are already melting the Siberian permafrost, the trapped methane could be suddenly released into the atmosphere leading to rapid and severe climate change.

Rare photos of CIA drone 'Bugsplat' bodies in secret blackhole battle released

Prominent human rights defender Clive Stafford Smith, head of legal action charity Reprieve, has helped release rare photographs Monday of tribal childrens' and other innocent civilians' bodies after attacked by President Barack Obama's weapon of choice, drones, used by U.S. military and CIA in the president's undeclared secret war on Pakistan. Stafford Smith has threatened to suit the U.S. embassy in Pakistan for its complicity in civilian deaths by drones, part of the program officially called by U.S. authorites, "Bugsplat."

"The CIA may have launched 70 drone strikes in tribal Pakistan in 2011 alone. But Americans, like the rest of the world, have no idea what the area looks like, or who lives there," reported Wired Magazine on Monday.

"Be advised: Many of these pictures are disturbing. Some of them show dead children," Wired Magazine reported.

President Obama's CIA drone strikes in Pakistan are largely focused on mountainous areas of Waziristan near the Afghanistan border.

In the broad-based campaign against the CIA' remote control drone attacks, Noor Behram, a resident of North Waziristan, has been working with Stafford Smith after spending years photographing the aftermath of drone strikes, often at personal risk.

"I want to show taxpayers in the Western world what their tax money is doing to people in another part of the world: killing civilians, innocent victims, children," Behram said.
