UK's Dark Cloud: Web 'black box' totalitarianism
Britain's on the verge of a web-wide Big Brother - with internet and phone providers readying 'black boxes' to monitor private emails, social network chats and even calls. The legislation's still in debate, but the liberty alarm bells are already ringing over the government's hunger for a license to listen in. Jim Killock from the Open Rights Group says that, if passed, the law will put British people's sensitive information at risk from online fraud.
Minister Claims Britain Cannot Prevent British Multinationals Supplying Egypt’s Military with Tear Gas
What I think Egypt’s revolutionaries will like about the British Minister’s response.
- His assurance that Britain continues to monitor the human rights situation in Egypt.
- His obviously deep concern about the protection of and rights of Copts under any new constitution.
- His assurance that the British government is encouraging SCAF to keep to its’ timetable for the transition to civilian rule. (This letter was written prior to the “judicial coup” of 14 June).
- His affirmation that the British government hopes to see a new Egyptian constitution which respects the interests of “all Egyptian people.”
However Egypt’s revolutionaries and liberals will be less encouraged by
- His claim that the British government can not prevent British Multinationals with factories outside the U.K. supplying the Egyptian military with crowd control material, including tear gas. He says it would “not be legally viable” and “such controls would be impossible to enforce.”
- His failure to explain why the British government continues to allow British arms exports to Egypt’s military regime despite acknowledging that “human rights and fundamental freedoms are mandatory considerations for all export licence applications.”
Lost in translation: Anonymous hacks Japanese government…almost
Japanese can be a tricky language, even for hackers. The hacktivist collective Anonymous found that out the hard way when one of their attempts to attack a Japanese government website went awry with bizarre results.
After Japan approved a new law last week threatening jail time for illegal downloading, the hacker group Anonymous released a statement promising retaliatory cyber attacks on Japanese government websites in response to the new measure.
But in a comedic turn of events, Anonymous hacked the wrong site.

They have been charged with “hooliganism,” and are facing up to seven years in prison. At time of writing, the women have spent 117 days in jail, with the trial postponed for months longer. This is without any family visits, despite two of the girls being young mothers.

China reports bird flu outbreak
Authorities in China's remote northwestern region of Xinjiang have culled more than 150,000 chickens following an outbreak of bird flu, officials said.
The outbreak of the H5N1 strain of avian flu initially killed 1,600 chickens and sickened about 5,500, the agriculture ministry said late Monday.
In an effort to contain the disease, agricultural authorities quarantined the area and culled 156,439 chickens, according to the ministry.
The outbreak occurred on June 20 but was only confirmed as H5N1 bird flu on Monday, it said.
Mexico declares emergency over new bird flu outbreak
The Mexican government has declared a national animal health emergency in the wake of a new outbreak of bird flu that has affected some 1.7 million fowl, leaving around 870,000 dead.
“We have activated a national animal health emergency with the goal of diagnosing, preventing, controlling and eradicating the Type A, sub-type H7N3 bird flu virus,” the country’s agriculture ministry said.

New York Times: “Illegal Organ Sales Have ‘Invaded’ Crisis-Hit Greece Too”
An extensive article published by the New York Times under the title “European Crisis Bolsters Illegal Sales of Body Parts” features Greece among the countries where illegal organ sales have recently been recorded as a result of dire financial conditions.
In heavily indebted Greece, a 46-year-old businessman from Piraeus recently said that the only way to save his family from ending up on the streets was to sell a kidney for €100,000, or $123,000. He told the Greek media that he had even hired a private investigator to help him find a buyer, reports journalist Dan Bilefski.

According to the report [released by Holpchi CH, a Swiss-based industrial analytics think-tank], radiological fires would lead to some 30 to 100 percent of the cesium and strontium being released from the pool.
“If a radiological fire occurs and further cooling is impossible, more than 10 percent of the radioactive material of the [spent fuel pond] cold be released,” read the report. “Release of 100 percent of the cesium, strontium and other isotopes would scale the base case results by a factor of 10 and would clearly present a dire situation for areas of Japan, marine life in the Pacific and the global environment.”
The report acknowledges that it is not fully comprehensive, saying that many modeling structures about what could happen should the spent fuel pool fail “have been developed by government, but appear to be classified.”
