This is a somewhat dystopian society where it is implicit that it has evolved thus because an unregulated free market economy has run its inevitable course resulting in a collection of monopolies which manage in toto various aspects of civilisation worldwide, such as power, food, media, etc. The irony is that the resulting society has ended up totalitarian in many respects whilst purporting otherwise and human relationships have largely been commodified, except of course for the ruling elite (i.e. those managing the monopolies) who live exempt from the restrictions to which others are subject. Thank goodness nothing like that could happen in our post-modern age...
