The Globalisation of Protest
By Joseph E. Stiglitz, Project Syndicate
he protest movement that began in Tunisia in January, subsequently spreading to Egypt, and then to Spain, has now become global, with the protests engulfing Wall Street and cities across America. Globalization and modern technology now enables social movements to transcend borders as rapidly as ideas can. And social protest has found fertile ground everywhere: a sense that the "system" has failed, and the conviction that even in a democracy, the electoral process will not set things right - at least not without strong pressure from the street.
The Global Insurrection Against Banker Occupation - Pilgrims by Van Der Graaf Generator
The only music worthy of a global uprising was made by Van Der Graaf Generator, and the only video footage worthy of Van Der Graaf Generator are clips of a global uprising.
Egyptian activists to take to Facebook again for a global online protest
Using all the tools at their disposal, activists in the Middle East have become as creative as they are daring in ensuring that their story is heard. In August this year, Egyptian activists used Twitter and Facebook as a means to not just organize a protest, but they decided to take the protest itself online.
The organization No Military Trials for Civilians, which was behind the previous protest, is once again using social media as a means of making their fight a global one. They have announced a second online protest taking place on Facebook tomorrow, as a part of their continued effort to bring to spread awareness about their cause.
In addition to the Facebook protest, the No Military Trials organization has also posted a call for international solidarity addressed to the Occupy Movement.
Egypt Declares November 12 an International Day Of Action
The end calls for an international day of action on November 12. “Nine months into our new military repression, we are still fighting for our revolution. Our strength is in our shared struggle. If they stifle our resistance, the 1% will win—in Cairo, New York, London, Rome—everywhere. But while the revolution lives, our imaginations knows no bounds. We can still create a world worth living.”
International Guest Eddie Daniels visits Occupy Detroit
Eddie Daniels was a political prisoner with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island for 15 years. He is in town until Sunday and has asked to come down to Occupy Detroit to share his story, speak with us and witness our local manifestation of the incredible global uprising taking place. We welcomed him and helped express the depth and power of the global struggle against today's economic apartheid system.
