The Globalisation of Protest

By Joseph E. Stiglitz, Project Syndicate
he protest movement that began in Tunisia in January, subsequently spreading to Egypt, and then to Spain, has now become global, with the protests engulfing Wall Street and cities across America. Globalization and modern technology now enables social movements to transcend borders as rapidly as ideas can. And social protest has found fertile ground everywhere: a sense that the "system" has failed, and the conviction that even in a democracy, the electoral process will not set things right - at least not without strong pressure from the street.

Egyptian activists to take to Facebook again for a global online protest
Using all the tools at their disposal, activists in the Middle East have become as creative as they are daring in ensuring that their story is heard. In August this year, Egyptian activists used Twitter and Facebook as a means to not just organize a protest, but they decided to take the protest itself online.
The organization No Military Trials for Civilians, which was behind the previous protest, is once again using social media as a means of making their fight a global one. They have announced a second online protest taking place on Facebook tomorrow, as a part of their continued effort to bring to spread awareness about their cause.
In addition to the Facebook protest, the No Military Trials organization has also posted a call for international solidarity addressed to the Occupy Movement.

Egypt Declares November 12 an International Day Of Action

The end calls for an international day of action on November 12. “Nine months into our new military repression, we are still fighting for our revolution. Our strength is in our shared struggle. If they stifle our resistance, the 1% will win—in Cairo, New York, London, Rome—everywhere. But while the revolution lives, our imaginations knows no bounds. We can still create a world worth living.”

Occupy Movement Reaches Paris

Inspired by the 'Occupy' movement in the United States, French protesters have started their anti-corporatism protests in the heart of Paris' financial district, La Defense, Press TV reports.
Heeding the call of an online campaign, hundreds of protesters thronged at Paris' key business district to protest against uneven distribution of wealth and the current economic crisis in the European country.
"In France, people think that it's okay for us. It's not like Greece. It's not like Spain, but it will come here so we have to be aware," said a protester.
The protesters set up their camps despite efforts by the French police to force their way into the encampment and confiscate blankets and food.
"They took the people by their legs, taking them out and sometimes hitting them and then took the tents, breaking them," said another protester.
The demonstrators believe the harassment is a prelude to mass arrests.

Indian Governement Files Biopiracy Lawsuit Against Monsanto

Representing one of the most agriculturally bio-diverse nations in the world, India has become a primary target for biotechnology companies like Monsanto and Cargill to spread their genetically-modified (GM) crops into new markets. However, a recent France 24 report explains that the Indian government has decided to take an offensive approach against this attempted agricultural takeover by suing Monsanto for "biopiracy," accusing the company of stealing India's indigenous plants in order to re-engineer them into patented varieties.
Brinjal, also known in Western nations as eggplant, is a native Indian crop for which there are roughly 2,500 different unique varieties. Millions of Indian farmers grow brinjal, which is used in a variety of Indian food dishes, and the country grows more than a quarter of the world's overall supply of the vegetable.

Judge OKs $410M settlement for Bank of America
A federal judge on Monday gave final approval to a $410 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit affecting more than 13 million Bank of America customers who had debit card overdrafts during the past decade.
Barry Himmelstein, an attorney for customers who objected to the deal, said he calculated that the bank actually raked in $4.5 billion through the overdraft fees and was repaying less than 10 percent. He said the average customer in the case had $300 in overdraft fees, making them eligible for a $27 award — less than one overdraft charge — from the lawsuit.

Killing Joke - Democracy [lyrics]

You have a choice, we are your voice

Red, blue or yellow.
We will blow away the green
Another five lane motorway
(You'll never get a referendum anyway)

Funny handshakes. insider dealing

Et in arcadia. arcadia ego
Backhanders and salamanders
A powerhouse that is morally
Mechula
I'm sorry democracy is changing
I'm sorry democracy is changing

I'm not a slogan or a badge

Or a cross in the ballot box
Neither values or objectives
You do not represent my deepest
Thoughts and wishes

Education in obsolete skills

Stereotyping and media projection
Industrial psychologists
Plan a campaign that is financed by
Big business

You have a choice, we are your voice

Red, blue or yellow.
We will blow away the green
Another five lane motorway
(You'll never get a referendum anyway)

Wall Street is out $60 billion, and we can inflict more pain

Got that? That's $60 billion out of Wall Street and into non-profit credit unions. That doesn't include non-profit community banks, either. Not bad for a movement "with no message", is it?

Two International Calls: Castor 2011 “Shut down the nuclear state” and a Camp in Valognes

According to the plans of the German government, there will be a further nuclear waste transport to the German town Gorleben located in the infamous Wendland region this November. It will be probably the last transport from the reprocessing plant at La Hague. During the last years, the transport didn’t happen without interference: hook claws (German: Hakenkrallen) and fire sabotaged the railway service, at many stations along the route, tens of thousands of people gathered at rallies and blockades or chained themselves to the tracks. This successful international resistance was possible even though the Castor train is regularly accompanied by an armada of armed and armoured police force, which is equipped with heavy gear.

He eats wild plants and makes money recycling. This is NOT a poverty lifestyle. Gary now owns 3 properties, all his health problems are healed and he is free from the stresses of society. Forget the economy. Everything you need is already around you right now. This is the future.

What Occupy Wall Street Can Learn from Occupy Tel Aviv

The tents seem to be everywhere now — Wall Street, London, Hong Kong, Madrid — but very little really comes close to what happened in Israel this summer: thousands camping out, hundreds of thousands marching, a society transformed. "It's all part of the same thing. It's people saying, 'We want to be in charge,' " says Stav Shaffir, 26, one of the first Israeli campers. Yonatan Levi, also 26 and an early organizer, offers a comparison with the scale of things in New York City: "Sadly, I think we were much more successful in transmitting our message and our ability to show up in great numbers. I mean, a half-million to a million people!"
