Protesters target Afghan war

Among those speaking were Irene Mathyssen, NDP MP for London-Fanshawe, and Josh Randall, a war resister who went absent without leave from the United States military.

The speakers all had similar messages: support the troops by bringing them home from Afghanistan.

Darius Mirshahi, president of Fanshawe College's social justice club and an organizer of yesterday's protest, is optimistic, but not unrealistic.

"I don't think just peaceful protesting is going to stop everything," he said.

"But I think it's a very important part of what we need to do."

Even the decision to hold the London event a day later than the other protests was made strategically, in order to allow people to attend other protests taking place Saturday.

They were held to mark the five-year anniversary of the Iraq war that began on March 20, 2003.
